The Nearest Whitewater Only Exists on Release Days

Same water as the Toccoa, different state, different name, and a river bed that is largely dry unless the TVA has opened a gate that morning.

The nearest serious whitewater to Blue Ridge is the Ocoee, about forty minutes north over the Tennessee line, and the single most important thing to understand about it is that it is not always a river.

The Ocoee is the Toccoa. The same water flows north out of Georgia, crosses the state line at McCaysville and Copperhill, and changes its name there. What happens to it after that is decided by the Tennessee Valley Authority, which controls the flow through a series of dams. For much of the early history of recreational paddling the bed below the diversion was simply dry. Scheduled recreational releases came out of litigation in the late 1970s, and they now run on most weekends from March through October.

That schedule is the rafting season. There is no rafting on a non-release day at any price, from any outfitter, and no amount of rain changes it. Check the published release schedule before you build a day around a trip, and book with an outfitter who is running on your date rather than assuming.

What you get on a release day is well worth the planning. The Middle Ocoee runs roughly 4.6 miles through something like twenty named Class III and IV rapids, which makes it one of the most heavily rafted stretches of whitewater in the country. The Upper Ocoee above it hosted the canoe slalom events of the 1996 Olympic Games on a purpose-built half-mile course; the Ocoee Whitewater Center built for those games burned down in 2022.

Two things to budget for beyond the ticket. Time: a half-day trip eats most of a day once you add the drive from Fannin County, the check-in, the shuttle and the drying off. And expectations about the setting, because this is a hard-working industrial river corridor with a road alongside it, not a wilderness.

For anything gentler, stay in Georgia. The Toccoa above Lake Blue Ridge is shallow, slow and made for tubing, and it is a completely different proposition from the same water forty minutes downstream.

Trails & Rivers Editor

Wyatt guided on the Toccoa and the Ocoee before he wrote about either, and still reads the week by the dam release schedule rather than the calendar. He covers the national forest end of this county: Forest Service roads, the Benton MacKaye Trail, trout water and leaf timing. He will tell you a waterfall is a cascade rather than a plunge before you drive forty minutes of gravel to find out.

Our newsroom is machine-assisted and human-edited: stories are drafted from verified public sources and checked before they publish. How that works is set out in our editorial standards.
